We've Evolved, We are Now: EarthShift Global!

Since EarthShift's founding in 2000, we have pursued a simple mission:  to partner with our clients and help them effect change that advances their organizations’ specific sustainability goals.

As EarthShift Global, we will continue to provide sustainability consulting, software and training to partners in industry, academia, and government, with special focus on sustainable manufacturing and design for sustainability. We offer life cycle assessment (LCA) software, including EarthSmart and PackageSmart, and custom sustainability software along with lifecycle consulting services tailored to our clients’ specific environmental, social and economic challenges.

Learn more about EarthShift Global — what’s new and what’s changed  in our business model.

LCA Capability Roadmap Development Continues

The LCA Advisory Board of SETAC NA held a workshop at their annual conference in Salt Lake City on November 3. They not only discussed the completed section of the LCA Capability Roadmap but also launched three new sections including two on Life Cycle Inventory and one on uncertainty.

Learn more about the five areas of concern in life cycle inventory they identified.

New! Data Updates for EarthSmart and PackageSmart

We have updated the data and methods used by EarthSmart and PackageSmart! This update includes 69 new processes, 9 updated natural gas processes and an updated ES method based on the latest ReCiPe Endpoint, world H/A 1.12 method.

We now have for the first time, US specific landfill processes, new metals, a 2012 US waste scenario and some South American electricity data.

Learn more about the input parameters that can now be tweaked as well as the process models.

We also want to hear what data is most important to you..

Our team has pioneered Sustainability Return on Investment (Sustainability ROI, S-ROI) analysis, helping industry (including many Fortune 500 members), NGOs, governments and academic researchers evaluate sustainability investment and risk reduction from broader perspectives. Our unique 3Pillars software has a database of social and environmental costs that streamline the S-ROI process.

Our sustainability experts, including founder Lise Laurin and Nathan Ayer, have an outstanding research and publication record that serves the worldwide sustainability community.  Laurin works on LCA methodology development with the International Standards Organization (ISO), Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC), U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), and American Center for Life Cycle Assessment (ACLCA); she is an international speaker on optimizing sustainability strategies within corporations.

We have helped companies integrate environmental sustainability into business operations through lifecycle analysis, consulting, product lifecycle evaluations and social impact assessment.

Our efforts help address broad issues that affect everyone, like climate change and fossil fuel depletion. But we understand that life cycle consulting and lifecycle assessment training are only effective when they go beyond concepts like environmental load units and address situation-specific needs of particular organizations. This is why we place the highest priority on creating working partnerships with You! As Our Sustainability ChampionsYou are the front line of the global quest for environmental sustainability.

We want to continue to empower and support you at every step of your work, partnering in research, analysis, and development of environmental sustainability measures that meet the unique and complex needs of your organizations.

We will help you de-mystify the path to sustainability. Our proven approach emphasizes engagement, adaptability and credible, measurable results, and the incorporation of performance-enhancing sustainable thinking into everyday business decisions.

If you’re a CEO or CFO seeking to reduce vulnerabilities and develop sustainability policies that generate both pride and ROI, an environmental engineer conducting lifecycle evaluation, or a product developer implementing design for sustainability, we are with you at every step to help you succeed. We can help optimize everything from project conceptualization to winning buy-in across your organization.

Different industries often have different environmental concerns, regulations, and stakeholder expectations. Our knowledgeable team of consultants, adaptable line of LCA and SROI software and market leading training courses can give you the exact sustainability solution you are looking for.

We have worked with progressive companies across a variety of industries, helping to build their trusted brand names, improve their performance and increase their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) ratings.

What Does This Look Like in Practice?

Our business model is built around our ability to engage in a variety of ways, applying sustainability consulting expertise, proven training techniques and innovative sustainability software on an as-needed, where-needed basis. This ensures both economy and effectiveness in a wide range of situations.

Because we understand sustainability theory AND practice, as well as having worked in such a diverse range of settings, we can strategize from a high level, or dig into a product-specific assessment with equal effectiveness.

The group identified five areas of concern:

  • Inventory model description and revision: Current LCI modeling techniques have weaknesses in the areas of model structure, clarity of linking to proxy or less than perfect data, clarity of allocation, assumptions, observations, inclusion of modelers assumptions on how the data might be reused.
  • Need robust and easier ways to allow multiple parties (e.g., universities, governments, industry) to share their data and part of those solutions need to address confidential business information, proxies, data gaps; How can data sharing be incentivized?
  • Need the ability to expand what we consider Life Cycle Inventory data and its spatial and temporal scale; e.g., water use, water use location, the uncertainty around the water use data.
  • Need methods to enable practitioners to access an overview, zoom and filter operation that provides details on demand; advanced querying mechanisms such as the ability to do a semantic search; allowing interaction and visualization
  • Data interoperability between tools, databases and methods

Because there is tremendous global effort working on the last topic, the group did not pursue that further. There was considerable interest in all four of the topics but the first two rose to the top of the list to work on.

Working groups are now forming to work on these two issues in Life Cycle Inventory along with a third group to consider uncertainty in LCA.  We’re currently looking for people interested in working on LCI or uncertainty.  Everyone is welcome to participate via web meetings; however all meetings will be during normal business hours in the US.

For more information about these meetings, please contact Lise Laurin.

New!  Data Updates for EarthSmart and PackageSmart!

We have updated the data and methods used by EarthSmart and PackageSmart!.
This update includes 69 new processes, 9 updated natural gas processes and an updated EarthSmart method based on the latest ReCiPe Endpoint, world H/A 1.12 method. Now for the first time we have US specific landfill processes where the emissions are modeled per EPA’s estimate of landfill gas captured for electricity generation, flared and oxidized. Also included in the update are new metals, materials, 2012 US waste scenario and some South American electricity data.

Processes are meticulously documented and are internally reviewed. Data are parameterized, where needed, to allow for easy sensitivity analyses and customization. The landfill processes are based on extensive research and consultation with experts. These processes are modeled with full documentation, and parameterization of key data inputs. These key data inputs include landfill gas yield 0-2 years, 2-100 years and 100-500 years, landfill gas captured, flared and emitted, landfill gas oxidation rate, and electricity credit generated as a result of landfill gas capture. The model documentation includes description of the landfill gas generation model and input parameters. These input parameters can be tweaked by the user, if the data need to be customized.

We always like to hear what data is important to you! Please let us know what data you need!
