June 12-15, 2017

There is an increased interest in understanding social impacts of products and business decisions as our society becomes more aware of the need for sustainable development.  Social impacts have been difficult to measure and have been traditionally excluded from LCAs. But now with S-LCA guidelines from the UN Environmental Programme and improved available databases, analysis of social and environmental impacts may be both more manageable and meaningful.Logo for Vista Volcanes

To consider the environmental, social and economic impacts of growing tomatoes and other food crops in Guatemala using a greenhouse mesh, our study used S-ROI to assess the investment. Vista Volcanes is an awardee of the US Department of State grant for innovative solutions in Latin America and has developed a greenhouse mesh.  The favorable climate of Guatemala plagues growers there with many pests.  Using this mesh keeps the pests out, allowing growers to significantly reduce the use of pesticides and fertilizers required while dramatically increasing yields.  To date the assessment indicates that beyond the grant’s direct impacts of significant environmental improvements and substantially higher incomes for growers, there are additional indirect societal benefits of crime reduction and improved food security.  More information is coming after our next analysis this month on site.

In addition to the LCA and S-LCA, this work explores the relationship between S-LCA and S-ROI, specifically, how S-LCA can inform the S-ROI work. Methodological issues in S-LCA, such as defining an appropriate functional unit are also examined.
