Free Brown Bag Webinar: LCA of an Innovative Shelf Life Extension Technology
Globally one-third to half of all food produced for consumption goes to waste, and fresh fruits and vegetables have the highest food waste rates due to perishability. Many existing solutions that extend the shelf life of produce, such as refrigeration technologies or single-use plastics, have significant environmental impacts. Apeel Sciences has developed a plant-derived coating for fresh produce that slows the rate of water loss and oxidation, the primary causes of spoilage, and can keep the produce fresh two to three times longer. By reducing loss and waste across the supply chain, the Apeel technology effectively increases yields and simultaneously reduces the embodied emissions and resource consumption associated with that otherwise wasted food.
Presenter: Shannon Thoit, Apeel SciencesShannon Thoits is a Sustainability Analyst at Apeel Sciences in Goleta, California. She conducts life cycle assessments to analyze environmental impact of Apeel’s products across various produce types and customer supply chains.

We caught up with Nathan at his home outside Halifax, Nova Scotia, and got some of his perspectives on this mutual milestone.
