The systems surrounding our food supply are complex, dynamic and include a fair amount of uncertainty. Yet these systems have well identified areas of impact and of benefit, both to the environment and to society. EarthShift Global can help navigate these complexities more easily without sacrificing quality. We’ve looked in detail at new agricultural practices to understand the environmental and social benefits to tomato production in Guatemala and cocoa production in Nicaragua, for example. We’ve also helped food processors look at new processing in techniques like the production of xylitol as a coordinated process with paper pulp processing.

Aquaculture is one the fastest growing food-producing sectors in the world and is expected to provide over 60% of seafood for human consumption by 2030. It is a diverse global industry and the environmental implications of aquaculture vary widely depending on the species being farmed and the form and intensity of production. As the industry grows, many new innovations in production technology are emerging, and LCA has been shown to be a useful tool for understanding the environmental performance and potential trade-offs associated with alternative systems.
EarthShift Global’s Senior Sustainability Advisor Nathan Ayer has applied LCA to quantify the environmental impacts and benefits of a range of aquaculture production systems, including closed-containment systems for salmon farming (www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0959652608001820), and most recently working with the International Copper Association on exploring the environmental performance of copper-alloy net-pens from cradle-to-grave. Nathan has also been involved in methodological development related to LCA and seafood production (http://link.springer.com/article/10.1065/lca2006.11.284) and recently collaborated with SustainAqua (http://sustainaqua.ca/) to apply a screening-level LCA to inform a feasibility study for upgrading a trout and salmon hatchery.

The demand for sustainable building products is growing, and the role of LCA in supporting the development and certification of alternative building products is becoming increasingly important. EarthShift Global can contribute to many aspects of green building products by using LCA to inform product design and material selection, and to quantify the life cycle impacts of emerging green building products to inform Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).
EarthShift Global has conducted LCAs of alternative building products, including a comparative study of the life cycle impacts of plastic deck boards relative to conventional pressure-treated boards. The cradle-to-grave study revealed the importance of considering the use phase and consumer behaviour in evaluating alternative building products. Most recently, EarthShift Global has used our LCA expertise and our optimized EarthSmart software program to support CarbonCure, a sustainability leader in the concrete industry, in developing EPDs for sustainable concrete products.

The industrial chemicals and plastics industries are unique in that the perception of their societal and environmental impacts is often more dire than reality. While those within the industry are aware of its strict product stewardship practices and enviable safety and environmental records, this information is all too often poorly disseminated in the public sphere. Life Cycle Assessment can help to clearly quantify the relatively modest environmental impacts of modern chemical production technologies in ways that are easily understood by the non-practitioner and to show how favorably the chemical industry compares with other industrial technologies. Sustainability Return on Investment (S-ROI) can be used to engage all stakeholders and provide valuable insight into how those perceptions affect the bottom line.
EarthShift Global has worked with specialty and commodity chemical and resin manufacturers to provide life cycle assessments for a number of processes and products. We have provided LCAs for a variety of rubber or plastics fillers and associated compounding and molding processes. Our LCA analyses helped our clients to discover new insights into remediation and more effective ways to use recycled resins, and to clarify some of the tradeoffs associated with the use of bio-based feedstocks.
Through the S-ROI methodology, we’ve helped chemical companies understand both the environmental and the social risks associated with low-level emissions. S-ROI has also helped these companies to uncover opportunities for new product development and to improve their understanding the corporate benefits of sustainability goals. In particular, EarthShift Global has worked over the years with Dow Chemical on its 10 year Sustainability Goals, helping the company understand the monetary value of its investments in these goals.
Clients: Dow Chemical, Dupont, SABIC, Air Products and Chemicals, AIChE, Saint-Gobain
Manufacturing-intensive enterprises in the consumer goods field are often ripe with opportunities for sustainability improvements at many points – decisions on materials and ingredients, production processes, packaging, transport, recyclability, and more. Because product volumes tend to be high, small gains can have a large multiplier effect. And a strong sustainability message in product marketing has increasing appeal to many consumer audiences.
The EarthShift Global team has extensive experience working with prominent consumer goods companies, including Procter & Gamble and Rubbermaid; we partnered with Colgate-Palmolive on development of our PackageSmart packaging life cycle assessment (LCA) software.
Clients: Reckitt Benckiser; P&G, Colgate-Palmolive, Rubbermaid, Stanley, Black and Decker, Steelcase
Sustainability education is key to enabling change in our society. Ongoing efforts to incorporate sustainability training into core engineering, business, and health care curriculua will result in a workforce that includes life cycle thinking and social responsibility as a routine part of doing business. EarthShift Global supports these efforts as the main corporate sponsor of the International Symposium for Sustainable Systems and Technology and its student paper and poster competition. We offer an introductory LCA education package (live or pre-programmed) that can be incorporated into any new sustainability course. All of our training and tools have educational discounts.
As the lead in the LCA Capability Roadmap development, we can help suggest research topics in areas of high international interest. We can also partner capable students with businesses in need of student support for LCA or S-ROI studies or internships.

Today’s technology affords huge societal opportunities as well as opportunities to reduce our impacts through sophisticated control systems. Complex supply chains and intense processing, on the other hand, create tradeoffs that are challenging to model and understand. EarthShift Global’s experience in the semiconductor and electronics industries and its connection to leading researchers in these areas allows us to model the more complex systems to identify hot spots and show the societal benefits of a given technology.
HP has relied on EarthShift Global to provide solid critical reviews of its LCAs and often refers vendors to us, knowing that we will be rigorous in our methods. Air Products has a close relationship with us, including partnerships in the LCA Capability Roadmap process, the AIChE Institute for Sustainability (http://www.aiche.org/ifs) and intern referral.
Clients: HP, Xerox, Air Products and Chemicals, Cisco, Eaton Corporation, Millipore
No consultancy can be expert in every area. EarthShift Global partners with other consultancies to provide in-depth expertise when needed:
- Introductory and advanced training for LCA and S-ROI practitioners
- Ongoing guidance through the first or second LCA
- As-needed advice on tricky choices, such as how to model recycling or how to get a particular software program to show results in a certain way
- Help preparing a report for critical review
- Well-managed critical reviews
- Subcontracted LCA and S-ROI studies
We work in the background, respecting the consultant’s relationship with their client.
EarthShift Global has an ongoing relationship with WSP and FPInnovations, providing a path from introductory LCA training through critical review. We work with ERM, partnering to apply the S-ROI concept to power plants, for example. AWMA 2015 (http://ace2015.awma.org/technical-program/).
We also contribute the S-ROI expertise within the Pathways to Prosperity Challenge project, led by the World Environment Center and in partnership with Baastel and Context Partners.
