Sustainability-HP Report Describes Action on Climate Change
A few weeks ago we noted some reasons to be hopeful about our ability to combat climate change, including the sustainability-oriented actions of private-sector companies. A recent email from our colleague Tom Etheridge at HP Inc. provided tangible evidence of this, in the form of a link to HP’s 2016 Sustainability Report.
By any standard, the report offers encouraging news-of increasing reuse and recycling; reduced consumption of energy, water and other materials; and policies that drive positive change for employees and supply chain partners.
But from a practitioner’s perspective, the remarkable thing (which we see in our interactions with HP) is the company’s integration of sustainability into both long-term strategies and day-to-day operations. There’s a combination of big-picture thinking, like a drive towards a circular-economy business model, and smart tactics – like having most HP printers default to duplex (two-sided) printing to reduce paper usage, and making service manuals as well as replacement parts readily available to extend product lifetimes. Either aspect on its own would be good; when they’re part of a coordinated effort, great things can happen.
Etheridge, who serves as LCA and Carbon Footprint Program Manager for HP Sustainability and Product Compliance, noted that HP’s recent inaugural Sustainability Summit featured an announcement of a new goal “to reduce our supply chain Scope 3 emissions intensity by 10% by 2025 compared to our 2015 emissions. This is in addition to our existing goal of reducing the emissions intensity of our product portfolio by 25% by 2020 compared to 2010 levels. We are able to confidently set these goals in large part due to the LCA work that we do with your help.”
We’re proud co-authors with Etheridge on several presentations at the recent ISIE/ISSST ’17 conference in Chicago, and send our thanks and congratulations to all of HP for giving us good reason to be hopeful.
