News week magazine has just published its first report on America’s Most Responsible Companies, and we were delighted to see that our longtime client HP is number one!

HP received a combined score of 94.4 in the survey, which Newsweek conducted in collaboration with the Statista research and analysis service. The rankings are based on Environmental, Social, and Governance indicators, and consider factors like waste, carbon, and energy intensity, employee turnover and diversity, and disclosure and transparency as well as economic performance.

Technology companies did well in the ranking, with Cisco, Dell, Intel and Microsoft joining HP in the top five spots. HP’s Environmental score of 97.0 placed it behind only three other companies, all of them in the financial sector (American Express, MetLife and Lincoln National).

EarthShift Global has supported HP on a number of projects, including Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of 3D printers and printing options for flexible packaging.

At every step, we’ve been tremendously impressed with how the company integrates sustainability principles into its business. As I wrote in 2017, “There’s a combination of big-picture thinking, like a drive towards a circular-economy business model, and smart tactics – like having most HP printers default to duplex (two-sided) printing to reduce paper usage, and making service manuals as well as replacement parts readily available to extend product lifetimes. Either aspect on its own would be good; when they’re part of a coordinated effort, great things can happen.”

We send our heartiest congratulations to everyone at HP, including the remarkable Tom Etheridge, whom we’ve had the pleasure of working with in his capacity as LCA and Carbon Footprint Program Manager for HP Sustainability and Product Compliance. Their entire organization has shown long-term commitment to and investment in sustainable business practices, while successfully navigating challenging market sectors, and they stand as an example of how businesses can innovate and grow while simultaneously lightening their footprint on the planet.
